Statistical Process Control

Objectives
Develop awareness of the symptoms and impact of “not closing the loop.”
Understand the need to view the data over time to learn about process behavior.
Distinguish between common cause and special cause sources of variation.
Learn the mechanics of constructing control charts for averages and ranges.
Gain an understanding of the use of control limits.
Be able to identify various signals when they exist in a real control chart.
Know the difference between SPC and process capability assessment.
Learn to calculate and interpret the process capability indices.
Distinguish between a nonconformity and a nonconforming unit.
Understand the sample size considerations for attribute control charts.
Learn the advantages of collecting additional support data and relating it to charted characteristics.
Find potential key input variables that could benefit the output by being controlled.

Methodology
This conceptually-based course makes liberal use of real life exercises, examples and workshops. Also provided are worksheets so that participants do not have to memorize mechanical statistical computations, allowing further emphasis on understanding of underlying conceptual issues related to process control. Course durations of less than four days may require a tailoring of objectives.

Length
Two to four days.

Who Should Attend
Individuals who are involved in production or service processes including management, engineering and quality; and have an interest in using statistical techniques to monitor and control their processes.
