Discovering the Future: Weak Signal Detection

Purpose
Long term success requires that enterprises learn new tools for anticipating the future. Innovative approaches to discovering the future must include the purposeful search for “weak signals” - harbingers of innovation and change - often concealed in the noise of the system, environment or marketplace.

The detection of weak signals must be accounted for both in planning processes and in carrying out the plan. Traditional approaches frequently contribute to an enterprise’s inability to detect weak signals, yet without deliberately searching for and learning from them, the chances for innovation and sustainable success are slim.

Participants will discover how to identify weak signals, prioritize and create Action Steps for them, and gain new insights and alternatives about the future of their organization, marketplace and industry.

Objectives
  Gain perspectives about the nature of their organizations as Complex Adaptive Systems. Develop awareness of “weak signals” and their importance in innovation and future planning.
  Explore Weak Signals and discover those ignored or discovered by innovators.
  Learn and apply Weak Signal Detection Tools to identify weak signals.
  Apply the Weak Signal Amplifier to prioritize and create action steps for them.
  Gain new insights and alternatives about the future of their organization, marketplace and industry.

Methodology
In this interactive presentation, you will review key aspects of Complex Adaptive Systems and understand the concept of weak signals. Audio and visual media will illuminate and provide examples from business, the arts, military and organizational environments of weak signals and their significance.

Participants will explore what the weak signals were missed, or discovered by the truly insightful. They will apply Weak Signal Detection Tools – including the Weak Signal Amplifier – to identify weak signals, prioritize and create action steps on them, and gain new insights and alternatives about the future of their organization, marketplace and industry.

Half or full day.
